Saturday marked not only my birthday, but the end of Standard Time in Europe, which has made the start of my 36th trip around the sun an especially agreeable one! As I begin to write this at 8:00pm local time, the sun is still shining brightly—if a bit long in the shadow—and the birds are still chirping their evensong. The world out here has an amazing spring green to it, punctuated by almond and cherry trees in full bloom. It is paradise. Of course none of this is because of my birthday, but the day felt like it kicked spring off into high gear.

Things are finally winding down after the hubbub of Holy Week. We heard
that Granada ranked number 10 on a list of Europe's most popular Semana
Santa destinations, and the overabundance of out-of- towners here during
the past week definitely supported that claim. I've been stuck standing
on a full bus with an armload of groceries on more than one occasion.
Don'tcha love the way I'm complaining as if I'm a local? Don't
worry though — David and I dove into the festivities just like all the
other good tourists.

I was biking back home from a late afternoon errand, when I was waylaid by a crowd, a trumpet, and a puff of smoke. Holy smoke, that is. Incense. But this wasn't a hippy street performer doing a one-man show. This was the start of Semana Santa, Holy Week, Spanish style.
