Summer is here, and the cicadas' song is about the only thing that hasn't ground to a halt these days, this blog very much included! Well, that's not exactly true. Our garden is blossoming (literally!) in the sweltering summer heat we're experiencing. Since this photo was taken, a week ago, we've already had our first tomatoes show up on the vines. Yeah, we planted late, but the plants sure haven't noticed! They're chugging along, as you can see from our garden photo page.
Yesterday, we tied up some of the lettuces as an experiment, and planted some more basil on the corners of the plot, to divert some of the bugs away from tastier, but less fragrant stuff. Everything is flowering—the peppers, the watermelon, the tomatoes. It's so exciting! What's more, we ate our first serving of chard from the garden last night. It's growing by leaps and bounds. The compost pit is also looking up, though it's getting too much sun! I need to buy a cover for it.
Otherwise, we're doing well–trying to stay cool, taking in some of the cultural offerings of the city, and making better friends with our present and former neighbors. Oh, and taking dips in the pool, which has turned out much better than expected, especially since we bought a chlorine dispenser for it. The city really empties out for the summer, and it isn't even August yet. Next month, I expect we'll be two of a handful of inhabitants left to guard the Alhambra... Even we're making plans to escape the heat for a week, with a camping trip to the Alpujarras and possible ascent to Mulhacén peak planned.
